Intermediate Girl Scout Ilene Donner, wearing a light-colored uniform, stands in the center of the scouts. She was one of only seven girls in Arizona who eventually became a “golden eaglet”, the highest honor in Girl Scouts up until 1938. Because Ilene’s hometown, Whiteriver, only offered schooling through eighth grade, her mother took her and her siblings, Ireane and Billy, to Tucson during the school year, and moved back to Whiteriver for the summer. Until 1958, Tucson was the home of the only university in the State.
